Review

'This is an unusually interesting and important book, which illuminates both our understanding of how modern nations have been built, and how women have tried to find new roles for themselves. Its value goes far beyond its specific Greek subject; it is a book for all nations and for men as well as women. It is the fruit of wide reading as well as a great deal of research into largely forgotten sources and it leaves the reader with a sense of wonder at the complexity of human aspirations and emotions.' - Theodore Zeldin, President of the Oxford Muse Foundation 'Tzanaki's meticulous research and careful contextualization of her case in the wider European scholarship on gender, nationalism and the public sphere make this an exemplary study. This is a ground-breaking piece of research for South-East European history and will be read with profit much more widely.' - Wendy Bracewell, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London
